COLOMBIA, S.C. — The Latest on the arrest of two people in connection with a fire at a South Carolina college (all times local):1:25 p.m.
President Donald Trump says the arrests of two men in South Carolina are evidence that “America is back” and that the nation is “united.”
The president says the two men arrested were part of an alleged conspiracy involving the University of South Carolina to create a hostile environment for the African American student body.
He says he is still trying to figure out what happened to the suspects.
South Carolina Gov.
Henry McMaster says in a statement that the arrests are part of a concerted effort by the University to undermine the values of the University.
The two suspects were arrested on Monday, according to a news release.
The university has been contacted for comment.
The Associated Press is not naming the suspects, citing the ongoing investigation.
The arrests come on the heels of another fire at an African American college in the state earlier this week, where a video emerged showing black students shouting racial slurs at white students and threatening to set a fire.
